Find a Divorcey Attorney Online - Yelp, Google, Lawyer Ratings

Currently most people still find their Family Law Attorney and Divorce Attorney through referrals. With services such has Yelp gaining traction it’s only a matter of time before people start using Yelp to find lawyers. Yelp started with restaurants, and has since moved into more services including Doctors, auto-mechanics, dentists, and attorneys.

Our advice here is to be very careful when reading and trusting online reviews. Sites such as Yelp do not require people to verify who they are prior to submitting reviews or comments. Amazon for example does require you to purchase the book, CD, etc before commenting. Yelp however has no such system in place. And it would be difficult for them to verify you used an attorney before you were able to leave a review – as they’d need to call attorneys all day long asking if they had the person as a client.

Therefore it is very easy for someone to put in fake Yelp reviews, or to hire a marketing or social media agency to do this for them. We are not saying this is happening for something you are looking at on Yelp, we are just saying it could happen which would then skew the results.

Lawyer Web-Sites

There are other sites out there providing lists of Lawyers, and sometimes including rankings based on user feedback, how many years they’ve been practicing, etc. While these sites can be helpful, a lot of them only post information on Lawyers who pay them a monthly fee. If you look at the top of those sites you will sometimes notice a link saying something like “Are you a Lawyer?” If you click on the link you will see the monthly fee they charge to have your law firm listed. They sometimes will even charge more so you are higher on the page, show your web-site, show your picture, etc.

Here is an example of a very well known Legal web-site that charges lawyers to be listed on their site. We are not disparaging them from this business practice. Only mentioning it so you are aware.

While online searches for lawyers gets more popular, we still caution everyone to be careful about why they are choosing one attorney over another. Our advice is for you to talk directly with any attorney you are considering hiring. Set up a time to meet with their at their office to go over the specifics of your case, and ensure they have the experience and know-how you are looking for.
